Uploading Your Mind: The Bet That Consciousness Is Just Data
Everything else on this site is about keeping the body running longer. This is the other bet entirely: that the body was never really the point, and if it can't be saved in time, maybe the mind can be extracted, stored, or transferred before it's lost.
The most direct — and most controversial — attempt at this was Nectome, a startup founded by Robert McIntyre that pitched a chemical brain-preservation technique (aldehyde-stabilized cryopreservation) explicitly designed to lock a brain's fine structure in place well enough that a sufficiently advanced future technology might be able to read out its stored memories and personality. Backed by Y Combinator and briefly partnered with an MIT lab, Nectome took $10,000 deposits from a waitlist of people willing to sign up. It became a national story in 2018 for an uncomfortable reason: the preservation process is invariably fatal, meaning it was effectively pitched to terminally ill people as something to undergo before natural death, not after. MIT cut its research ties once the ethical implications became public. The company's premise — that the information is what matters, not the biological substrate holding it — is the cleanest possible statement of what this entire category is betting on.
Ray Kurzweil has been the intellectual anchor of this idea for decades, folding it into his broader "Singularity" thesis about humans merging with sufficiently advanced AI. He's spoken publicly about a deeply personal version of it too: using his late father's letters, photos, and writings to eventually build an AI reconstruction of him — a specific, human-scale example of the same logic Nectome tried to commercialize.
Elon Musk's Neuralink is a more cautious, mainstream version of the same underlying interest in brain-computer interfaces — though it's worth separating what the company officially does from what Musk has said in interviews. Neuralink's stated near-term mission is restoring communication and movement for people with paralysis, a real and narrower medical goal. Musk's own public comments about long-term "symbiosis" between humans and AI, made separately in interviews, go considerably further than anything the company has claimed to be building.
Further from product and closer to research, Randal Koene coined the term "substrate-independent minds" and runs the Carboncopies Foundation, a nonprofit focused specifically on the feasibility question behind all of this: whole brain emulation. The most cited technical treatment of the idea remains a 2008 roadmap report from Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute (Anders Sandberg and Nick Bostrom), which took the concept seriously enough to estimate the actual computational requirements — while being explicit that the timelines involved are highly speculative.
Here's the part almost nobody funding this wants to sit with in public: even a perfect copy of your brain's data doesn't obviously solve the problem of continuity of experience. If the biological original is dead, does a separate system that behaves like you, remembers like you, and insists it's you actually carry your subjective experience forward — or does it just believe it does, while you experience nothing further? Nobody has an answer. It isn't a solved engineering problem waiting on better hardware; it's a genuinely open philosophical question sitting underneath one of the best-funded ideas in this entire space.
